Why Samskritam – This is the most common question that comes across anyone’s mind when they hear about Samskritam being taught. ‘It is a divine language used by the priests during Hindu rituals. It is not useful otherwise’.
This is the general apprehension of many. Indians can relate to learning Mother tongue, learning Hindi and learning English. They look at learning these languages as survival skills.
But are under the notion that learning Samskritam has no incentives in our day to day lives and so with the already busy lifestyle, no one likes to spend time on learning this ancient language.
But the information that is lost regarding this ancient language is that Samskritam was a widely spoken language in India until the invasions made by many foreign rulers. Any language is a means of not only communication, but also preservation of a culture. Samskritam education was replaced by British education system and this had a heavy impact on Hindu society and Samskritam scholars. Also, Samskritam is just not a language of communication, but also the language of the Hindu Scriptures. Samskritam scriptures contribute to the knowledge of all sciences such as Mathematics, Vyakarana, Astrology, Astronomy, Physics, Botany, Philosophy, just to name a few. Many of the texts have been lost during the invasions made on India, but whatever little is available today is unable to be used as very few people know Samskritam. Contrary to the belief that learning Samskritam is not relevant in today’s lifestyle, it has to be understood that learning Samskritam opens doors to wide spectrum of knowledge systems in all branches of Science, history and fine arts. While knowledge of these systems help in getting a better understanding of the environment around us and in our careers, India has the most advanced philosophical texts, that promotes spiritual growth. To unlock the doors to these invaluable texts, learning Samskritam is the only way.
It is the responsibility of every parent to introduce Samskritam along with the Mother tongue to their children. This is the only way we can pass on our Samskriti into the next generation. There are a few organizations such as Samskrita Bharati and Samskritam Promotion Foundation that are working hard to bring back Samskritam into the society as a conversational language and thus create an interest for further study. This also helps to bring social integration irrespective of caste, creed, region and tradition and also rejuvenates Indian culture.
bhAratIya kalA saMskRuti promotes Samskritam by conducting free classes.
